Complementary and Alternative Medicine
(CAM)

Complementary and alternative medicine ( CAM) is a group of diverse health care systems that are not presently considered to be part of conventional medicine, such as acupuncture, ayurveda, chiropractic, homeopathy, Chinese medicine and massage. CAM therapies used alone are often referred to as “alternative”, when used in addition to conventional medicine they are referred to as “complementary”.

Alternative medical systems are built upon complete systems of ancient knowledge in terms of theory and practice. They have evolved earlier than conventional medicine. Naturopathic medicine
and Homeopathic medicine developed in the Western cultures, and traditional Chinese medicine or Ayurvedic medicine developed in the Eastern cultures. For example: “Ayurvedic Medicine is a CAM alternative medical system that has been practiced primarily in the Indian subcontinent for more than 5,000 years. Ayurveda includes diet and herbal remedies and emphasizes the use of body, mind, and spirit in disease prevention and treatment.” (Definition from NCCAM – National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine: “Get the Facts”.)
